A 1st rank holder at the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Post-Graduate Degree Program in Microbiology from the University of Mumbai, India, Dr. Seema Oommen was also a recipient of a Gold Medal as co-author of her research study, ‘Nosocomial Infections in the Intensive Paediatric Care Unit’. The award was conferred on her at the 39th National Conference of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics.
For a celebrated personality in the field of microbiology, Dr. Oommen’s other encomiums have been added to her virtually as a natural outcome of her career spanning two decades and more. She holds Life Memberships in The Royal College of Pathologists, London; Indian Association of Microbiologists; Academy of Clinical Microbiologists, India; Hospital Infection Society, India; and the Indian Medical Association.
Dr. Seema Oommen has been a committed scholar of microbiology and an ardent author in the specialization throughout her career. As Professor and Head of the Department (Microbiology) at Pushpagiri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research centre, a 1200-Bed tertiary medical college hospital she was respected as an effective PhD and MD Guide to MD Microbiology psotgraduates and research scholars in the microbiology department.
Dr. Oommen has published 44 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has authored a Chapter titled, ‘Emerging Respiratory Pandemics’ in the textbook, ‘Clinical Pathways in Emergency Medicine’, (Springer Link.2016.)
Apart from the above, Dr. Seema Oommen received special training in the following certifications: Internal Auditor: Medical Laboratories Accreditation, ISO 15189:2012 Awareness and Internal Audit, conferred to her at Dubai, UAE; Certification in Hospital Infection Control: JIPMER, India; Certification in Basics of PCR Techniques from the Manipal Centre for Virus Research; Infectious Disease Certificate Course (IDCC) from PD Hinduja Hospital; Certification in Radioimmunoassay (RIA) Techniques and Clinical Applications, from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, India.
A fluent communicator in English, Hindi, Marathi and Malayalam, Dr. Oommen is engaged as Specialist medical Microbiology at Burjeel Medical City, Abu Dhabi, UAE, and finds time to pursue her keen interests in the subjects of Antimicrobial Resistance, Tuberculosis and other Infectious Diseases at the hospital and research centre.
