Palliative and Supportive Care

Palliative Care is a medical specialty which may be appropriate at any point to persons affected by cancer or other life limiting illnesses.

A life-limiting illness is an illness that can’t be cured. You may hear this type of illness called ‘life-threatening’ or ‘terminal’. People might also use the terms ‘progressive’ (gets worse over time) or ‘advanced’ (is at a serious stage) to describe these illnesses. Examples of life-limiting illnesses include advanced cancer, motor neuron disease (MND), heart failure and dementia.

Palliative Care is focused on the relief of symptoms and improving quality of life, and, when appropriate, end-of-life care. It is available for everyone – of any age, race, culture, background and religion. There is an increasing body of evidence demonstrating the benefits of early palliative care input alongside standard oncology treatment – this includes improved pain control, improved quality of life scores and increased life span.
